Timber Market Update
- Supply still remains tight for many products, with C24, CLS, TR26, Formwork and many fencing sizes still on extended lead-times.
- The Irish sawmilling sector is still being affected by log availability due to the recent issues with felling licence applications. It has been reported the issue with the licences has been resolved but the impact of the backlog will be seen for the rest of the year.
- A recent National Association of Home Builders report suggests that the current spike in softwood lumber prices has caused the price of an average American new single-family home to increase by $16,148 since April 17. Similarly, the price of the average new multifamily home has increased by $6,107 in extra timber cost alone. Another article also published in the USA reports on how this is pricing home-owners and builders out of the market. There are early signs though that the price has stabilised, albeit at record levels.
- The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) recently published an interactive ‘Due Diligence Toolkit’ to help with the change in obligations required from January 2021 as we transition from the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) to UK Timber Regulation (UKTR).
