Industry news

The UK government have decided to continue to recognise the EU ‘CE’ product safety symbol for some building products. This comes after industry concerns that a UKCA label would act as a barrier to trade and result in increased administrative costs. This decision to stick means less confusion and cost for UK manufacturers.

Timber Market Update

• TDUK (Timber Development UK) have reported on the increasing stability of the timber market. With this stability, large fluctuations in the import costs observed over the past couple of years are predicted to come to a stop. However, inflation and interest rates are due to remain high.

• A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Timber Development UK (TDUK) and the Structural Timber Association (STA). The agreement will aid in the growth and development of the timber market.

• Global Wood Markets Info (GWMI) provide an insight into the changes we are starting to see in trade from the EUDR ahead of its enforcement in January 2025. Matthew Spencer (IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative) summarised that successful navigation of the policy will largely depend on the producers “share of volume exported to the EU and the share of smallholder farmers compared to large scale farmers and plantations”.

Fun fact!

Did you know a single metre cubed of wood can store 1 tonne of CO2!

Wood makes for a powerful construction material with its potential to store an amount of carbon dioxide equivalent to a modern car driving 180,000km. Known as a ‘carbon sink’, houses made of wood contribute to better air quality and lower CO2 levels in the area.
