Overview

The new residential development on Melyn Close, situated between the towns of Neath and Briton Ferry, has provided the area with a total of 14 one-bedroom flats and 6 two-bedroom flats. Situated in an ideal commuter location for residents working in Swansea or Cardiff, the scheme was designed by RLH Architectural and managed by CJ Construction for client, Tai Tarian Housing Association.

The existing blocks were energy inefficient, damp and in urgent need of replacement. Taylor Maxwell worked closely with the architects to specify and supply the Gormley Grey facing brick, from our solus range, to bring a new life to the site.

Concept to completion

The design brief focused on providing light and modern structures to create an attractive centre piece to the existing close-knit community in Neath. RLH Architectural designed the housing development with the brief and the local vernacular in mind. By choosing to use the Gormley Grey brick on the facade of the three buildings, the architects have created a beautiful contrast between the surrounding green landscape and the dwellings.

Completed in February 2022, the scheme comprised the demolition of existing flats and the erection of three smaller new blocks. The original building and landscaping was described as dated and visually intrusive, making the new design a better fit for the area. The development has a car park and cycle storage for residents as well as beautifully landscaped surroundings. Minimal disruption was caused during the construction period with residents praising the builders for keeping them up to date with the site’s progress and helping them clean the dust on their cars and windows created by the site.

Social housing provider, Tai Tarian, is committed to delivering high quality and environmentally friendly new affordable housing. The new development has high levels of insulation, a highly efficient heating system, extra ventilation, LED lighting and integrated solar panels that will feed green energy to every flat.

The range includes both wirecut and stock brick options, all competitively priced and available in a variety of different colours and finishes to blend seamlessly with other facade materials, such as the cedral cladding utilised on this development.
