Market Update

  • Timber Trades Journal (TTJ) Online notes that Nordic sawmillers are posting record results. They additonally provide caution on Autumn market dynamics due to unstable cooling off periods and higher energy costs.
  • Timber Development UK (TDUK) statistics show that 2022 is set to be a record year for hardwood imports. This increase in hardwood volumes has largely been driven by Latvia and France, with Timber Media reporting their totals growing 110% and 82% respectively.
  • The European wildfires meant a record loss of forestland. The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) reported that approximately 660,000 hectares (1,630,000 acres) of land have experienced wildfires since January 1st through August 13th, 2022. This is 56% higher than the previous record set over the same time period in 2017.
  • ‘Timber cities’ could save more than 100 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2100. Cutting out the use of glass and concrete could aid us in avoiding climate catastrophe. Nature Communications cites concerns over meeting the new demand for wood and the biodiversity risk if new plantations are not appropriately managed.
