Overview

Barnwood Distribution Centre was built on a 5.3-acre plot of land alongside the A417 in Barnwood, Gloucester. Built in a key location just one mile outside of Gloucester city centre, the distribution centre is also only a few minutes away from Junctions 11 and 11a of the M5 motorway, which links the South West with the Midlands. Originally commissioned by client, Amazon and managed by main contractors Bowmer and Kirkland, the 118,000sqm distribution centre will now be sub-let to another company for their use. The development includes offices, a multi-storey van storage deck, HGV parking spaces and 183 car parking spaces for members of staff.

Taylor Maxwell worked with sub-contractors Keyclad, to supply polyester powder coated (PPC) Anvil metal cladding fins to the multi-storey car park located on the site.

Concept to completion

Designed by Keyclad to span from floor to floor as a decorative finish, the aluminium fins were manufactured in a bespoke design, to fit the project requirements. By fixing the fins to the building at a specific angle, the amount of sunlight that can enter the car park has been significantly reduced. As car parks are places where heat can easily build up, keeping a majority of the sun out whilst still allowing for some natural daylight to enter was important.

As well as providing a functional purpose, the fins also provided an aesthetic finish to the car park. Selected in a beige-grey colour, the fins appear almost metallic gold, which contrasts strikingly against the black fencing and greenery of the landscaping below. The colour also works well alongside the beige rendered columns situated around the car park.
